Shark Week, shark conservation, and vote to help sharks!

Posted by David Whysharksmatter Shiffman

shark week Hello, friends!     Last week was Shark Week on the Discovery Channel. Last year, I (and many others) were critical of the fear-mongering and lack of conservation focus. This year was MUCH BETTER! Please read my detailed review (including clips from several of the shows), and join in the discussion. If the Discovery Channel sees that lots of us are happy with the changes they've made, they will likely continue them! Please, please, please join in the discussion here:

In honor of shark week, I wrote a detailed post about shark conservation. It's an excellent background resource if any of you don't know why sharks are in trouble or how you can help them- and it's an excellent resource to share with friends and teachers. Check it out here, and let me know what you think:

Finally, the University of Miami's Shark Research program is up for a Pepsi Refresh grant. Please take a minute to register (it's free) and vote for them. You can vote every day, and they would appreciate the help.

Feel free to add David WhySharksMatter as your facebook friend, and follow me on Twitter @WhySharksMatter to learn more about sharks!

Thanks, everyone!
Sincerely,

CIMG0098

The magnitude of the Gulf Oil spill is sadly beyond comprehension...

as we say at SurfMonk, "we are all islands, oceans connect us "-

And everything IS connected in the the fragile eco-systems we  all are part of-

Our hearts bleed for the wetlands, the deep seas, the fragile coastal marshes, the beating hearts of creatures great and small, the livelihoods of dedicated fisherman, and our own appetites for clean domestic seafood...

to quote Rachael Maddow..."believe in Louisanna..."

and we urge you to support the clean-up efforts of  non-profit agencies such as: www.worldwildlifefund.org, www.uscoastguard.org, www.globalgreen.org, www.oceana,org, and so many others...

God speed to the brave and hard working individuals working to stem the tide of this disaster-

and to all of us..USE LESS OIL!!!

Why Eco-Fibers?

bamboo
Bamboo is nature’s most sustainable resource, grown without pesticides or
chemicals. It’s commonly known that bamboo can thrive naturally without
any pesticides. Scientists have found that bamboo owns a unique anti-bacterial
component which makes it immune to pests or pathogens. This substance combines
with bamboo cellulose molecules tightly all along during the process of being
produced into bamboo fiber.
Bamboo fiber has natural functions of anti-bacteria, bacteria stasis and
deodorization. It is validated by Japan Textile Inspection Association that even
after 50 times of washing, bamboo fabric still possesses excellent anti bacterial
function. Bamboo fibers natural anti-bacterial function differs greatly from
chemical antimicrobial, which can cause skin allergies when added to apparel.
The spinning process makes bamboo softer than cotton, which feels similar to silk
or cashmere. The softness holds up after countless washes.
Surfmonk’s lucious velour terry is 70% bamboo, 30% cotton. Our weaving process
takes place at a modern plant in denezli, turkey, known for producing the finest
terry cloth over the world.  We manufacture and dye surfmonk in los angeles, with sweat-shop free labor.
keeping production in the usa is an important choice for us - it reduces our carbon footprint and it supports our local economy.
We hope you’ll value the products as much as we do.
Enjoy your SURFMONK ROBE for many swells to come!
